December Morning

7"X5" Oil on board
This one turned out even more "impressionistic" than I intended. It wasn't helped by the fact that I dropped it as I was taking it down to photograph. Not only did it land "butter side down", it landed on my palette!

  1. This is a strong painting and whatever it looked like before you dropped it I guess doesn't matter now! Your story reminds me of one of when I was just beginning to paint en plein air.

I had worked on a piece most of an afternoon in the Tetons, then went to my car and loaded up all my painting stuff (I thought). After arriving at my motel half an hour away I realized I didn't have the wet painting with me! I had set it on top of the car as I was loading up and then had blithely driven away.

I had to retrace my path in the dark, driving slowly to look for the painting, which I figured could be about anywhere. I finally saw it in the middle of the road on the center line, butter side down, not far from the place I'd parked hours earlier. It was remarkably unharmed, with a few skid marks. I felt like the shepherd who finds the one lost sheep after a long search.
