Rainbow

12"X12" Oil on canvas

Remind me never to try this again!

A midsummer rainbow over Youngstown, New York. Not this year, not a drop of rain in sight as temperatures hover around 35C.

There are numerous problems with tackling a painting like this, not the least of which is that it is almost impossible to photograph a rainbow effectively, so I had to resort to memory and research.

The rainbow has to be lighter than the surrounding sky, but also has to be slightly transparent, try achieving that with paint! Keeping a steady hand while drawing the arc is tricky too.

All in all a salutary lesson in knowing my limitations.

A cup of tea and a good book.

5"X7" Mixed media

I have lost track. I don't seem to be able to manage more than every other day. I think this is day 17 of the "31 day sketchbook challenge".

Look Up #2

AKA the Pony Mart.
My other submission to the NAC "Small Feats" fundraiser. This building has hardly changed at all in the past 25-30 years. More bits drop off, that is about it. I hope that someone restores this beautiful roof one day.

A Path not Taken

12”X12" Oil on canvas

This is the last of the 12x12s I have painted over the past few weeks, and it will also be submitted to the NAC show.
Although this one also started out as a real place it became somewhat mystical as I was painting it  and I decided that it would go well with my two commuting pictures.
Commuting to work every day through the countryside and farmland is a big improvement over highway and city driving (except in the winter when the roads are the last to be cleared), but there is still no time to stop and explore those other paths that look so much more interesting.

I plan to go back to my postcard sized format for a while and doing lots of drawing , some of which I may post here.
